Enjoy a Crystal River Refuge swim with manatees in Citrus County, Florida!
Swimming with manatees in Crystal River is one of Florida’s most unique wildlife experiences. Visitors travel from around the world to Citrus County to see Florida manatees in the clear, spring-fed waters of Crystal River and neighboring Homosassa.
Our Most Popular 3-Hour Crystal River and Homosassa Springs Manatee Snorkel Tour is $79.99 per person, with snorkeling equipment and wetsuits included.
But before choosing where to swim with manatees, there is something we think every visitor should know:
Crystal River isn’t your only choice.
After more than 26 years of firsthand experience with manatees in Citrus County, we often recommend Homosassa to guests looking for a quieter and more personal experience, particularly during the busy winter migration season.
Crystal River may be the most famous destination, but famous doesn’t always mean it’s the best choice for every guest — or every manatee.

Crystal River or Homosassa: Which Manatee Tour Should I Choose?
Both Crystal River and Homosassa offer opportunities to encounter the same Florida manatee in natural, spring-fed waterways.
The biggest differences are not the manatees.
They’re the waterways, springs, number of visitors, boat traffic and overall experience.
Crystal River
Crystal River is internationally known for its winter manatee population and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. During colder weather, large numbers of manatees migrate into the area’s spring-fed waters seeking warmer temperatures.
The Crystal River area includes famous locations such as Kings Bay, King Spring and Three Sisters Springs.
It can be an incredible place to see manatees.
Its popularity, however, also means Crystal River can experience considerably more tourism activity during peak manatee season.
Homosassa
Homosassa is located just south of Crystal River and provides another opportunity to experience Florida manatees in their natural habitat.
The Homosassa River is spring-fed and connected to the beautiful Homosassa Springs system. Manatees use these waters throughout the year, with additional animals arriving during colder winter weather.
In our experience, Homosassa often provides a quieter, less congested and more personal manatee encounter, especially when Crystal River is experiencing heavy winter visitation.
That’s why we frequently recommend our VIP Homosassa Manatee Tour to guests who ask us which location we prefer.
Why We Often Recommend Homosassa
A great manatee encounter isn’t about getting as many people as possible around an animal.
It’s about slowing down.
Being quiet.
Giving the manatee space.
And allowing the animal to determine the encounter.
Fewer boats and fewer people around a manatee can mean fewer distractions for the animal and a calmer experience for our guests.
Our approach is based on passive observation. We teach guests how to respectfully share the water with manatees rather than chase, surround or pressure them.
For us, protecting the experience and protecting the animal go hand in hand.
More people around a manatee doesn’t make a better encounter.
Sometimes the exact opposite is true.
Can I Swim With Crystal River Manatees From Homosassa?
Yes — in the sense that Crystal River and Homosassa are home to the same species and regional population of Florida manatees moving through Florida’s coastal and spring-fed waterways.
You don’t have to be in Crystal River to experience a wild Florida manatee.
Homosassa provides its own natural manatee habitat and spring-fed river system just south of Crystal River.
For guests who primarily want a memorable, respectful manatee encounter rather than simply being able to say they visited Crystal River, Homosassa may be the better choice.
What’s the Difference Between Crystal River and Homosassa Springs Manatee Tours?
The biggest difference is the environment in which you experience the animals.
Crystal River is the internationally famous manatee destination. It attracts visitors from throughout the United States and around the world, particularly during winter.
Homosassa is less internationally recognized but can offer a quieter alternative with fewer distractions and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Both locations can provide outstanding manatee encounters.
After operating in these waters for more than 26 years, however, we frequently prefer Homosassa when conditions allow because of the quality and personal nature of the experience.
Where Is the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge?
The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is located in Crystal River, Florida, in Citrus County along Florida’s Nature Coast.
The refuge was established specifically to protect the Florida manatee and important warm-water habitat within the Crystal River and Kings Bay ecosystem.
Several well-known manatee areas are associated with Crystal River, including Kings Bay, King Spring and Three Sisters Springs.
Our Crystal River tours explore these waters while following all applicable wildlife regulations and responsible manatee-viewing practices.
Are Crystal River and Homosassa Manatees Different?
No.
They are the same Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee.
Manatees are wild animals and move throughout Florida’s rivers, coastal waters, bays and spring systems.
The experience can be different because the habitat, number of people, number of boats, weather, tides, water conditions and location of the animals change from day to day.
That’s one reason experienced local captains and guides are so important.
There is no single spot where a wild manatee is guaranteed to be waiting.
We go where conditions and the animals lead us.
Which Has Clearer Water: Crystal River or Homosassa?
Both Crystal River and Homosassa contain beautiful spring-fed water, but water clarity changes daily.
Wind, tides, rainfall, boat traffic, vegetation, weather and the number of manatees using an area can all affect visibility.
Crystal River is famous for the clear water associated with Three Sisters Springs and other springs around Kings Bay.
Homosassa also receives exceptionally clear spring water from the Homosassa Springs system.
Rather than choosing a tour based solely on photographs of perfectly clear water, we encourage guests to choose based on the overall wildlife experience.
These are natural rivers, not swimming pools, and conditions are part of experiencing wild Florida.
Where Are There Fewer Crowds: Crystal River or Homosassa?
In our experience, Homosassa generally offers the better opportunity to get away from the concentrated tourism activity associated with Crystal River, particularly during the busy winter migration months.
Crystal River’s worldwide reputation attracts a large number of visitors.
Homosassa can provide an alternative for guests looking for a more personal experience with fewer distractions and less concentrated activity around the manatees.
This is one of the primary reasons we recommend Homosassa.
We believe a quieter encounter can be better for the guest and better for the manatee.
Which Is Better for Swimming with Manatees in Summer?
We often recommend Homosassa during the summer.
Many people mistakenly believe Florida’s manatees disappear when winter ends.
They don’t.
Resident manatees remain in Citrus County throughout the year, and summer can provide wonderful opportunities to encounter them.
Summer generally has fewer visitors than peak winter migration season, warmer air temperatures and a completely different feel on the river.
The springs remain approximately 72°F year-round, making the water refreshing even during Florida’s hot summer months.
Because manatees are wild animals, the number and location of animals varies daily, but summer shouldn’t be overlooked.
Which Is Better for Swimming with Manatees in Winter?
Winter is when Crystal River becomes world famous.
As Gulf water temperatures fall, manatees seek warm-water refuge in the spring systems of Citrus County. This can bring large numbers of manatees into the Crystal River area.
Seeing that migration can be spectacular.
But it also brings people.
If your priority is seeing the famous Crystal River manatee habitat and potentially larger concentrations of animals, choose Crystal River.
If your priority is a quieter, more personal experience with fewer distractions, we recommend considering Homosassa.
There isn’t one answer that’s right for every guest.
That’s why we operate in both locations.
What Is the Best Place to Swim with Manatees in Florida?
Crystal River deserves its reputation as the Manatee Capital of the World, and everyone interested in manatees should experience this incredible ecosystem.
But the best manatee tour isn’t necessarily the place with the most boats, swimmers or even the most manatees.
After more than 26 years of taking guests onto these waters, we’ve learned that some of the most memorable encounters happen when everything gets quiet.
One boat.
A small group.
A patient guide.
And a manatee that is allowed to behave naturally.
That’s what we try to provide.
And it’s one reason Homosassa has become one of our favorite places to introduce guests to Florida’s manatees.
Small Groups. Passive Observation. Manatee Education.
Whether you choose Crystal River or Homosassa, our philosophy remains the same.
Our trained captains and guides teach guests about manatee awareness, conservation and passive observation before entering the water. Our guides accompany guests in the water to help create a safe and respectful experience for both people and wildlife.
Guests who would rather remain aboard the boat are welcome to enjoy the experience as manatee watchers without entering the water.
Your participation also helps us continue educating visitors about Florida’s manatees and why protecting their habitat and respecting these animals matters for future generations.
We aren’t simply taking people swimming with manatees. We’re introducing people to an animal and ecosystem we’ve spent more than 26 years working around and protecting.
Crystal River or Homosassa? Our Recommendation
If seeing the internationally famous Crystal River and Kings Bay ecosystem is on your bucket list, choose our Crystal River Manatee Snorkel Tour.
If you’re asking us where we would recommend for a more personal manatee encounter with potentially fewer crowds and fewer distractions, take a serious look at our Homosassa Springs Manatee Tour.
Both are authentic Florida manatee experiences.
But sometimes less is more.
Fewer people. Fewer distractions. More time to appreciate the manatee.
