How Much Does It Cost to Swim With Manatees in Florida?

A private group floating with manatees

Search for a manatee swim near Crystal River and the prices look all over the map: one tour at $55, another at $99, private boats from a few hundred dollars to almost a thousand. Most of that spread comes down to three things: how many people share the boat, how long you’re out, and what is or isn’t included in the ticket.

This guide breaks down what a manatee swim tour costs on Florida’s Nature Coast in 2026, based on the published prices of tour operators in Crystal River and Homosassa, and the questions worth asking before you book.

TL;DR

  • Shared manatee swim tours in Crystal River and Homosassa published starting prices of about $55 to $110 per person in October 2026.
  • Private boats for up to six guests on a 3-hour trip started at roughly $420 to $600 per boat.
  • The biggest price driver is group size: larger boats carrying 10 or more guests tend to sit at the low end; small boats limited to six guests cost more per seat.
  • There is no government fee to swim with manatees. The Three Sisters Springs ticket sold by the City of Crystal River is for walking the land boardwalk, not for swimming.
  • Before booking, ask what’s included: wetsuit, parking, photos, booking fees and what happens if you don’t see a manatee.

Typical manatee tour prices in 2026

These ranges come from the published “from” prices on the websites of Crystal River and Homosassa manatee tour operators, checked in October 2026. Prices change by season and date, and checkout taxes or booking fees can add to the total, so treat them as a starting point.

Tour type Typical published price Usual length What drives the price
Shared tour on a larger boat (10 or more guests) About $55 to $99 per person 2 to 3 hours Volume: more seats spread the cost of boat and captain
Small-group shared tour (6 guests max) About $75 to $110 per person 3 to 4 hours Fewer guests per captain, more room in the water
Private boat for up to 6 guests About $420 to $600 per boat 3 hours You pay for the whole boat, not by the seat
Longer or larger private charters About $560 to $900 or more per boat 4 hours to a full day Time on the water, boat size, meals
Boat-only viewing cruise (no swimming) About $35 per person 1.5 hours No wetsuits or in-water time

Shared vs. private: which costs less?

For a couple or a small family, a shared tour is usually the cheaper option per person. For a group of five or six, the math often flips.

Take Swim With Manatees, a small-group manatee snorkel tour company on the Homosassa River in Citrus County, Florida, as a worked example. Its 3 hour shared boat starts at $81 per person and its 3 hour private boat is $450 for up to six guests. A group of six on the shared tour starts at about $486 before any add-ons, while the private boat is $450 and nobody else comes aboard. That’s why Swim With Manatees suggests groups of five or six compare the private price before booking seats.

Swim With Manatees also runs a 4 hour private boat at $585 and a 6 hour private trip with a dockside lunch at $999, both for up to six guests.

Why small-group tours cost more per seat

Many manatee boats on the Nature Coast carry 10 or more guests. A boat capped at six guests has the same captain, fuel and permits spread across far fewer tickets, so the per-seat price is higher.

What that buys is room. Fewer swimmers means less splashing and noise around the manatees, more space in the water, and a captain with time to answer questions. Whether that’s worth roughly $10 to $30 more per person is a personal call, and both models get people in the water with wild manatees.

Is there a fee to swim with manatees?

No government fee to swim with manatees turned up in our research. Tours reach the manatees by boat, and the tour price covers the trip.

The ticket people often confuse with a swim fee is the Three Sisters Springs land access ticket sold by the City of Crystal River, which covers the boardwalk around the springs, not swimming. From November 15 to March 31 it’s $20 for adults and $17.50 for seniors; from April 1 to November 14 it’s $12.50. Children 6 to 15 are $7.50 and kids under 6 are free. What should be included in the price

Most manatee tours include the basic gear, but it’s worth checking each of these before you compare prices.

  • Wetsuit, mask and snorkel. The operators we checked include these, but confirm before you book. Swim With Manatees also includes a flotation noodle and carries wetsuits from toddler sizes to 5X.
  • Parking. Many operators include free parking at their dock; some marinas in the area charge for it. Swim With Manatees guests park free at its private docks at Monkey Island Riverside Resort.
  • A warm drink. Several operators serve hot drinks on winter mornings. Swim With Manatees serves hot cocoa and coffee in the cooler months and ice water in warmer ones.
  • A plan for no-sighting days. Manatees are wild, so policies differ: some operators sell a sighting guarantee as an add-on, some offer a raincheck. Swim With Manatees’ No Sighting Promise gives a return voucher that never expires, free with Trip Protection or $15 per person without.

Extra costs to ask about

These are the add-ons and fees that most often change the final bill.

Photos

Some tours include underwater photos, others sell a photo package after the trip. Swim With Manatees sells an optional event photography package starting at $114.99 per booking on the shared boat and $124.99 to $199.99 on its private tours, covering up to six guests on one boat, with photos and video delivered the same day.

Booking and service fees

Online booking platforms can add taxes or service fees at checkout, and some operators keep a booking fee on refunds. Read the checkout total and the cancellation policy, not just the headline price.

Trip protection

Cancellation coverage is usually optional. At Swim With Manatees, Trip Protection adds 10% and allows cancelling or rescheduling for any reason up to 48 hours before departure.

Small-group minimums

Some shared tours need a minimum number of guests to run. At Swim With Manatees, if only two guests are booked on a shared tour, a $25 startup fee is collected at check-in and the boat runs with just those two; the fee is waived if another guest books.

Gratuity

Tipping your captain is common on Florida boat tours but optional. Operators that address it, such as River Ventures in Crystal River, describe gratuities as optional.

How to compare tours fairly

Comparing headline prices alone can be misleading. A clearer way to compare:

  1. Multiply the per-person price by your group size and compare it to a private boat.
  2. Check the maximum number of guests on the boat.
  3. Add any parking, photo and booking fees.
  4. Check how much time you actually spend in the water, not just the tour length.
  5. Read the cancellation and no-sighting policies.

FAQ

How much does it cost to swim with manatees in Crystal River?

In October 2026, published starting prices for shared manatee swim tours in Crystal River and nearby Homosassa ranged from about $55 to $110 per person, and private boats for up to six guests started around $420 to $600.

Is it cheaper to swim with manatees without a tour?

Swimming with manatees without a tour is possible in some public waters, but you’d need your own gear and transportation, and you’d need to know the rules for refuge sanctuaries and closures. A tour adds the boat, the gear and a captain who knows where the manatees are that day.

Do I need to tip my manatee tour captain?

Tipping is optional. Many guests tip if the captain made the trip memorable.

Why are some manatee tours so much cheaper than others?

Mostly group size and inclusions. Larger boats spread costs across more guests, and some lower prices exclude photos, parking or a no-sighting policy that other tours include.

The bottom line

Expect to spend roughly $55 to $110 per person for a shared manatee swim on Florida’s Nature Coast, or $420 to $600 for a private boat for up to six. The right choice depends on your group size and how much room you want in the water. For current prices and departure times, see Swim With Manatees’ tours, and read What to Expect on your manatee tour before you go.

Master Captain Gene Parker on his boat on the Homosassa River

Written by

Captain Gene Parker

Master Captain Gene Parker founded Swim With Manatees in 2000 with his own little docks, a couple of boats and two captains, and has spent the 26 years since taking small groups to observe wild manatees on the Homosassa River. He grew up watching Flipper and was a scuba instructor in Oklahoma before moving to Florida, where he found his passion for manatees. Today the business runs five boats with a family of seven captains who teach as much as they drive, and every boat carries six guests, not sixty. Gene built it all around one idea: let the manatee decide. On the blog, he writes about manatee behavior, the seasons on the river, and how to plan a trip that puts the animals first.
